How to Choose Wall Art That Suits Your Design Style

How to Choose Wall Art That Suits Your Design Style

Make no mistake about it. Art makes or breaks any design scheme. The variation of styles provides a form of beauty and pleasure for anyone. An instant mood gets created when you add the right abstract painting or well-constructed canvas gallery to your walls. However, the choices available these days makes it easy to fall into the grips of overwhelm. I totally understand. No worries though.

In this article, we are going to explore several ways to choose wall art that suits your design style. There are several factors to consider when choosing art for the home or office. Many times, these factors interrelate so I thought it best to break these up into categories for the sake of simplicity.

#1 Composition and the Room

This is a great place to start. There are certain types of compositions that are best fitted to certain rooms. For example, when I think of the kitchen I think of fruits and vegetables, chefs, wine bottles, etc. For the bedroom, I consider images of passion, softness, and perhaps botanical, like a large rose picture. And the bathroom… well, what can I say about this most diverse area of the home? The style and overall tone of bathroom design changed throughout the years. So, it only makes sense that the choice of art would as well.

For bathrooms, I think of images that evoke a sense of cleanliness and water scenery. We create the perfect ambiance when the images we choose help the mood of the room. Gallery walls are the perfect idea and area to create a play on composition. When several pictures carry a common theme a very different feel is given to the room. The discussion of gallery walls continues in a bit. For now, let’s move on to one of my favorite subjects: color!

#2 Color

Where do we begin with our discussion of color in wall art? Let me count the ways. When choosing a color scheme for your wall you will need to consider the walls, furniture, carpeting, window treatments or draperies, trim molding, and other design aspects of the room. The colors in a room should complement one another. An art piece with a well-balanced array of color can tie a room together.

If a room is empty, I like to choose the rug and the art first and then the furniture. Some people prefer to do this the opposite way. However, choosing rugs and art first makes sense when you think about it. Think of it in this way. How often does someone walk into a room and say, “That ottoman is majestic! It just takes my breath away!”

However, that can happen with a well-chosen piece of art. Often, art will be the showpiece of a room. So, rather than let the furnishings dictate what your art will look like, allow the art to dictate what kind of furniture you will choose.

#3 Space

This aspect can be tricky. Consider this example. If you have a space above your stove that is one foot and a half tall by four feet wide, it is difficult to find one image to fill this space. However, you could use three images of a similar genre. Aka… a gallery wall. Remember when I told you we would come back to this discussion? Well, here we go.

To fill the gap, I might choose three 8 x 10 sized images of abstract art placed vertically. Another challenging space might be a very large wall or a room with a vaulted ceiling. A grouping of images often does the trick in both situations. My living room has a vaulted ceiling and I’ll just go right ahead and say these areas prove to be tricky more often than not.

For some of my clients, I have used very large prints, 4 x 8 feet tall and larger, to fill these spaces. Keep in mind that large art is proportionately more expensive. Yet, the overall effect of such statement pieces on the design scheme presents a timeless aspect in the room. One last option is to use a single image broken up into several galleries of canvas art spaced apart to cover a large area.

#4 Genre and Personal Style

Perhaps there is an art piece that you are particularly fond of but it clashes with the style and architecture of your home, or maybe it just doesn’t match the color scheme of the room you want to put it in. I have gone to such measures as changing wall colors and room accents to accommodate art. The essential elements of design come together in a cohesive manner when a well-chosen art scheme relays both personal style and enhances the architecture of the house.

No matter which way you decide to go when choosing art, keep this one question in mind. Does the art I chose make me feel fabulous when I walk into the room? If the answer is an excitable yes, then give yourself a strong round of kudos. You just mastered the concept of choosing the wall art that suits your design style.

8 Ways to Use Bold Color And Patterns In Your Home

8 Ways to Use Bold Color And Patterns In Your Home

By now you know that bold design works in almost every design scheme. You’ve probably spent a great deal of time scanning the Instagram and Pinterest feeds of your favorite home decor bloggers just to be left wondering how the heck you can pull off something so darn ballsy, right? Yep! I’ve been there too. Many times in fact and so have several clients.

Most people who follow me on my cyber homes know that I love bold design. I don’t believe in leaving one inch of bare space. Every single element in the room should work together to create a mesmerizing design plan. This is my joy juice. I’ve created bold designs in my home and for my clients. Take a look at this guest bedroom I designed for a client.

If you’re thinking this can’t be done for you then stop, drop what you’re doing, and let’s go through 8 ways to use bold color and patterns in your home to make a strong impact.

Wall Tiles

Oh, the joys of the choices in wall tiles to be used in our homes. These days they come in thousands of sizes, shapes, textures, and patterns. The use of wall tiles creates one of the easiest ways to incorporate design and color in your room. Create a striking border using a set of tiles that share the same size and characteristics yet the color or pattern might be different. Contrast when using wall tiles is key in the overall scheme of things.

Wallpaper

If you’re afraid of going overboard via the use of permanent decorative fixtures such as tiles then why not try a wallpaper instead. They come in all types of flavors and sizes from minimal Scandinavian clean to maximal Bohemian jazz. What makes the use of wallpaper even more feasible in a design scheme is the ability to remove when you grow tired of the pattern. Yes, removable wallpaper is all the rage these days.

Wall Fabric

The main difference between wall fabric and wallpaper is the textures. While the patterns found in most wall fabrics tend to run on the subdued side you can still find some pretty awesome designs on the higher end. Plus, who wouldn’t want to feel the soft fabric on a wall? These work particularly well in rooms such as the home office, bedroom, entertainment, and man caves.

Patterned floor tiles

Inspired by the ancient allure of Mediterranean homes, the use of patterned floor tiles is on the rise. However, this is one element that I make sure I present to my clients via samples and mood boards before sealing the deal. Many things can go wrong in the end design game if this element isn’t chosen with meticulous care. Don’t let that stop you though. Lots of things look fabulous when the right patterned tile adorns a room.

Throw Pillows

Design is like a women’s outfit. And throw pillows are the jewels hiding inside the box. Take the ones you need and use them for a while then change them when you’re ready for the next outfit. No kidding. These little babies (or not so little ones if you’re into European shams) have come a LONG way. Throw pillows are one of my favorite aspects of a design plan because the versatility creates an endless stream of choices.

Ceiling design

Don’t forget about your 5th wall. Yes, the ceiling presents the potential for more design elements. From simple modifications such as paint to more elaborate choices like parametric lighting design and glamorous chandeliers. While the ceiling doesn’t have to be a bold color, you can choose to go dark or install gorgeous lighting such as the one pictured here in this living room rendering. This is where e-design truly does shine. We can cover several variations on one design scheme while saving time, headache, and expense for you in the endgame.

Mirrors

Yes, they come with patterned frames now so you can truly make an impact with bold color while employing the benefits of feng shui (a subject for another post). Remember back in the day when mirrors came in either round, square, or rectangles? And who could ever forget that harsh fake brass finish that mucked up the design most times? Yeah, that would be me.
Fast forward about 30 years (don’t be trying to guess my age now) and we’ve arrived at a mirror design revolution. Sunburst. Scallops. Three-dimensional mirrors. Beach-inspired frames made of genuine seashells. Want a mirror in your design? No probs. The design world has one waiting out there for you. This is why I always recommend a bold mirror in each design scheme. Not only do they create the illusion of a larger space but they also add just the right amount of pizzazz to create a true conversational element of bold design.

Accessories

Perhaps there’s a good reason why I’ve saved the best element of bold decor for last. Trust me. There is one. Because out of all the previous tips we just walked through, this one provides the most flexibility. These days, the use of accessories comes in tons of sizes and flavors. Books, magazines, bookends, statues from the Romanesque era (nope, not a typo). Gone are the days of simply placing a vase of silk roses or fruit baskets on a table. You know have the choice of using bold grasses, decorative antiques, painted Mason jars, and whatever else your imagination conjures up.

As you can see, the use of these 8 elements provides plenty of flexible ways to use bold colors and patterns in your home. While some of these tips can be easily handled by most DIYers there are a couple on here that would benefit from employing a professional designer. If you’d like to get in touch with us and discuss ways we can help you get started on your next project then simply house this contact form and someone will be in touch soon.

Happy decorating!

8 Ways To Decorate An Apartment 2020 Style

8 Ways To Decorate An Apartment 2020 Style

8 Ways To Decorate An Apartment 2020 Style

It’s late at night and you find yourself scrolling through yet another beautiful Instagram feed from your favorite home decor blogger. Why did I pick an apartment? I can’t decorate or personalize anything. That’s what you’re probably saying. Or you’re might be asking: When will I get a chance to have this kind of beautiful place? No worries. Even if you’ve chosen a life of temporary closeness with your neighbors there is still hope.

More than ever landlords are allowing a few amenities to apartment design plans. Also, white paint comes in so many different shades these days. Many landlords allow tenants to paint walls in neutral white and sometimes even pastels shades. You’ll need to check with your landlord to confirm the individual rules. We’re going to cover 8 tips for decorating your apartment in this article. Let’s get started.

Tip number one: Determine your design personality.

No decor scheme anywhere is going to work unless you know what you want in a design plan. This includes both homeowners and renters. Browse your favorite magazines and blogs of your favorite designers. You’ll get tons of inspiration from these masters of design. Take as much time as needed to gain an idea of your individual design style. We have a quiz to help you out with this step. Click here to take our style quiz.

Tip number two: Organize your space and determine its purpose.

Again before you can even start bringing new items into your floor plan, the area must be neat and clean. If stacks of magazines from 10 years ago litter your living room floor then it’s going to be hard to add new structural items. Here are some questions to ask yourself. Who will be using the space? What type of activities will take place in each room? Are there kids? Do you need a home office? Now is the time to think about the answers to these questions.

Tip number three: Thoroughly clean everything.

That includes windows, baseboards, kitchen walls, appliances, the works. Think of these things as your canvas. Every artist starts with a clean sheet of paper, right? This tip piggybacks on the end of tips number one and two and should very well go without saying. However, so many clients skip this step just to find out it was a very important one. Don’t be this person. You’ll thank me later for asking you to follow tips 1 through 3 before moving on to the next ones.

Tip number four: Your paint & decor color scheme.

Yes, there is such a thing even for an all-white room. White paint comes in all shades and intensities these days. You need to know what appeals to you. KLDesigns can help you with this part of the plan. The paint scheme has to match your design style. That rug you’re oozing over needs to bring elements of your design style into play while creating a cohesive room. Throw pillows should reflect your design style and add splashes of color that can’t be achieved via paint. And if you followed our suggestions in tips 1-3 then you’re ready to tackle this portion of the plan like a pro.

Tip number five: Put those Pinterest boards to good use.

Unless you’ve lived under a rock over the past decade then you’ll know Pinterest is the happening spot for design ideas. As creatures of habit,  we humans tend to gravitate towards things that catch our eye. Pinterest is mo different. Create a board targeted for the specific room you’d like to decorate. In this case, you’ll want to create one to cover the target rooms in your apartment.

Pin photos of spaces that speak to you design-wise. Once you’ve collected a minimum of 25 pens at the very least, take a look at the pattern. This is usually the fastest and most efficient way to determine my clients’ styles. It also helps them validate their choices. If you’re having a hard time deciphering the pattern amongst the melee of all your pens then enlist the help of a designer. That’s what our eyes are trained to do… To make sense of the chaos.

Tip number six: How much furniture do you need?

This part of the process is where so many people get hung up. Apartment design falls within a different scope than a large home. The bottom line basics for what you need in a bedroom is a bed, at least one side table, and a dresser. If you don’t have a lot of windows, then you’ll need more lamps.

For the living room, you need a couch, a coffee table, a side table if possible, and space for your entertainment center. Everything else falls under the wish list category. You should scrutinize the urge to add anything outside the above-mentioned guidelines with caution. Don’t justify impulse purchases. Stick to your design game plan and budget by buying the essential basic furniture pieces first.

Tip number seven: Think of your foot traffic and focal points in the room.

Do you have a lot of visitors? Then you’re going to want to keep the area between the front doorway and the first couch in the living room clear. One of the most useful rules for decorative spacing is to keep at least 24 inches between pieces of furniture. If you followed the advice in the previous step, then this won’t be a problem.

Does your room have a beautiful feature? We recently designed a small living room inside of what I nicknamed The Mountain House. The windows fell into a pattern that presented gorgeous views of the landscape. We enhanced this feature to the fullest extent of the design. Take a look at this photo to see what we mean.

Consider both the layout of your home and spatial needs when making plans for decorating. Dedicate one spot in each room to a gorgeous focal point.

Tip number 8: Put it all together and enjoy your new plan.

This is perhaps the most important part of decorating your apartment… Taking time to enjoy your hard work. Look around and see all of the tips we mentioned in this article that have come to life around you. It feels great, doesn’t it?

Here at KaSonndra Leigh Designs, we’ve helped several renters find their design mojo. We also have a package called the Airbnb plan for homeowners who are ready to take their whole house plans to the next level. This plan also works well for renters because it employs the design of several rooms at once.

No matter which way you choose to go, whether it be on your own or with a professional interior designer, then keep in mind that your space ultimately reflects who you are as a person. This goes for both homeowners and renters alike.
Introducing the Haute Bohemian Design Style

Introducing the Haute Bohemian Design Style

Elements of Haute Bohemian Design

You know the style by now, I’m sure. Wild patterns, multiple colors, trinkets from travel worldwide, the works. This informal style of decor all makes up the bohemian style of design. Throughout the last decade, the boho style has evolved. What started as a melee of all things color and travel-related has grown into an industry-standard that now contains several levels of boho interior style. Many bohemian style design books have been published and they all focus on what designers like to call the New Bohemians. However, the intricately entwined details of traditional Bohemian (yes, there’s such a classification now) isn’t for everyone. There’s a way to capture the essence of free-spirited Bohemian design without the need to deal with the overwhelm of pattern matching.A more toned-down version of Bohemian design involves the usage of a neutral base as in the choice of colors on the wall while implementing two or three subtle patterns throughout the space. A mixture of fine metals and textures adds to the sophisticated feel of the style we’re discussing today. This pared-down version of maximal Bohemian design is called Haute Bohemian.

What distinguishes the characteristics of Haute Bohemian from other versions of this wildly popular interior design style?

There are several things:

A. Neutral colors on the walls and main design elements
B. Richer tones and fabrics used throughout the design
C. Patterns are still present in the Haute Bohemian world although they’ve been given more of a stage to thrive on and stand out within this type of design.
D. A sense of cohesiveness in the overall design that doesn’t exist in its wild-child cousin
E. Pieces collected from travels around the world. So you have none of those you say? Nonsense. Thrift stores inherit travel heirlooms all the time. Some of the most interesting pieces displayed in my home were found during a thrift shop raid. But that’s the topic of a whole new blog post that we’ll get to later.

While both maximal and Haute Bohemian styles employ the feel of a well-traveled owner, the main difference between the two designs rests in the choice of color and fabrics used throughout the main focal elements of the room.

For example, the maximal bohemian bedroom uses several rich colors on the wall along with patterned wallpaper and another design in the curtains. It’s more reserved cousin the Haute Bohemian uses light gauzy fabrics on the windows that either display a small pattern or none at all.

The window treatment choice either blends in with the white walls or displays a small pattern to be admired when observed on closer examination by the homeowner’s enamored guests. However, neither style would ever be accused of that hideous word, the red sheep of the design world… boring. The mixture of fabric texture, pattern, and wall coloring still makes up the basis of the allure of Bohemian design magic.

The overall design should feel as though the items in the room were collected over time. The challenge of Haute Bohemian design might appear to be easier said than done. After all, you can simply toss anything and everything into your intended space and voila! The design is complete. Um… not really. There’s still a method behind the Bohemian design scheme. The overall goal is curated sophistication and not a hot tangled mess.

Throughout this article, we’ve included examples of designs where we’ve used the Haute Bohemian design style. The goal was to create a space that when people step inside they feel as though they’ve been transported to both another time and global location as well. When done correctly, Bohemian design creates one of the most cohesive and fun design plans of all styles.

If you’d like to talk to us about bringing this sophisticated style of curated Haute Bohemian design into your home then let us know. Schedule an initial e-consultation today and let’s get started bringing your Haute Bohemian dreams to life.

8 Ways To Work From Home And Keep Your Sanity

8 Ways To Work From Home And Keep Your Sanity

8 Ways To Work From Home and Keep Your Sanity

The times have changed. And it did so in such a way that we weren’t ready and didn’t see this new wave of remote work coming. However, a large portion of us has worked from home before. Being thrust into the mouth of a kitchen office madness doesn’t seem so daunting. The rest of us most likely need some help with figuring out ways to work from home and keep your sanity.

Let’s go through a few tips:

Tip number one: Organize your new space.

Whether it’s a room dedicated to a home office or a spot at your dining table, your new digs will need to be organized. In my case, I’ve used a spot in my living room/office for the past decade or so as my home office. Soon that will change. Yes, there’s an official room in the house I’ve designated as the space for this new office. Until then, I have no problems making my spot at the dinner table a hybrid position.

Tip number two: Remove distractions.

This one should go without saying. However, limiting attention hogs is not always easy to do. Kids can be a huge distraction. This goes for both young and old alike. Attention hogging via older kids can be as simple as talking about or playing a new Xbox game. No, we don’t want to hear the gunfire in Gears of War echoing in our ears while we work. Help your teenage or older child understand that gaming time will have to wait. Or they will need to find an area to self isolate themselves Problem solved.

Younger kids present a different challenge for home workers. If you have a spouse at home you can rotate the time they need between each other. If not then you will have to take note of vital activities in their daily schedules. When are they most active? Do they need toys as a distraction? Can the kids play with each other for a while without creating a melee? Being observant and answering these questions will help you develop a routine.

Tip number three: Create the best aesthetic for you.

If you work in an office and you’re used to hearing various noises (copiers, fax machines, coffee pot chatter, etc.) then you might need to make some adjustments. White noise apps can help with this. On the other hand, if you’re used to trudging along in a relatively quiet environment then things might be more challenging. It could be that you’ve found yourself caught up in one of the scenarios from bullet point #2.

Or for whatever reason, you don’t have the luxury of a silent work environment (enter neighbor who plays Game of Thrones reruns at full surround sound blast). Time to get creative. For the young kids’ issue, review the tips in bullet point 2. Help your older kids understand that game time has to be limited or moved to a different area altogether. Neighbors are an entirely different story. If peaceful confrontation isn’t an option then use noise-blocking headphones to play soothing music. Or use a wireless speaker to create the environment you need.

Tip number four: Take frequent breaks.

When working from home we generally don’t have the same setup as we do at work. This means there are no walking trips to the printer. The bathroom is accessible and sometimes only a few feet away. And the yummy brownies leftover from the previous evening’s meal awaits in the kitchen behind our seating area. Get up and walk around. Head outside and soak up a few minutes of sun. Stand up and run in place if you have to. Don’t fall victim to a sedentary lifestyle. Keep in mind that we will return to work at some point. You don’t want to fall behind in the game when we go back. Also, keeping ourselves in shape helps boost our immune systems.

Tip number 5: Get dressed.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to go full-on office gear with makeup included. However, it does mean that you need to get out of your bed and remove your bedclothes. Wear some of those cute items that you just recently bought online from your favorite store. This is a great time to put them to use. Hygiene plays an important role in productivity. If you jump out of bed and take it with you to your home office then guess what? You will spend most of the day feeling like you overslept.

Tip number 6: Tidy up your home.

While a nice clean home is always a fabulous thing, spot cleaning your digs will especially help your productivity during this time. Work can be stressful. We all know this. If you’re sitting in a spot that smells like last night’s spaghetti meal then that’s not going to help the situation. Take some time on the weekends to clean up. Or use this time during one of those frequent breaks you’ll be taking to vacuum your office area. Many studies show that a fresh and organized space creates a productive one.

Tip number 7: Make a to-do list each morning.

Distraction comes easily when you work from home. It took me a while to get my routine in place. I found that making a to-do list at the start of each morning gave me a sense of normalcy. This doesn’t have to be an extensive or detailed document. At the very least, you should try to organize the day’s workload by what’s most important. This step gave me a tremendous boost in confidence.

Tip number 8: Use productivity apps when possible.

Again there’s something about working at home that presents a different type of freedom. Checking the internet becomes second nature. It’s hard to break that habit if you’re not used to working from home. Recognize the times when this happens. That way surfing your favorite online spot doesn’t cut into your productivity. There are several productivity apps that do things like blocking the Internet and setting a timer for work sessions. Freedom and the Pomodoro app come to mind first. I’ve used these in the past and still do at times to get chunks of writing done. They worked for me and I believe they’d do the same for you.

That’s all the work from home tips I have for now. I hope you find this list helpful. Do you have other tips for working from home that wasn’t listed in this article? Let us know by sounding off in the comments below.

Stay safe everyone!

10 Tips to Consider When Remodeling Your Bathroom

10 Tips to Consider When Remodeling Your Bathroom

Out of all the home improvement projects, few can provide the benefits of a bathroom remodel. Renovating the bathroom is a great way to add real value to your home. On the plus side of that, a renovation of this level will increase the enjoyment of yourself and your family. Interior Design Mag and Houzz Magazine both cite bathroom and kitchen remodels as the largest drivers of a quick sale.

There are a number of things to consider before undertaking such a major project. We go into detail about these critical design factors to save you money in the project’s end game. These 10 tips for bathroom design offer everything from budgeting tips to best contractual practices.

Let’s dive in!

1. Keep a handle on the end goal. It is important to see the bathroom remodeling project as a whole project. Even though there are many small hurdles to tackle, it is important to see the project as a whole. You could spend days waffling back and forth between deciding on finishes of individual elements. Make your plan at the beginning and stick to the final image with gusto.

2. No remodeling project can be successful without a realistic budget. Take the time to draw up an honest budget, and try your best to stick to it. If you follow the advice given in step one then you are well on your way to conquering the number one cause of renovation setbacks.

3. Get a reliable contractor. For most people, remodeling the bathroom is not a do it yourself project. It is important to find a contractor who has experience with plumbing and remodeling bathrooms. Although KLD doesn’t yet offer new construction packages for bathrooms, we can certainly help you create a gorgeous design for your existing layout.

4. Get a detailed inspection of your bathroom done before you start. A good idea would be to have a plumber inspect your bathroom for leaks and other problems before you start. You know the age-old idiom… better safe than sorry. This rings especially true for bathroom design.

5. Now is your chance to be more energy efficient. Chances are you will be able to save money in the long run by installing low flow toilets, water-saving showerheads, and other energy-efficient fixtures. Plus you get credit on your tax return for certain energy-efficient upgrades.

6. Stay organized. Proper organization is essential to a successful bathroom remodeling project. Use a calendar to keep track of important deadlines, and remain organized as you go forward. I know we mentioned a similar tip in the first bullet point but sticking to the ned game and budget makes or breaks most projects.

7. Use a rendered bathroom design. If you want a larger bathtub or even a jet tub, be sure to draw it out and make sure you have enough space. This is where KLDESIGNS comes in. We have two packages available to help you visualize your space with incredible realism. Our finishing touches package includes the design for fixtures, furniture, flooring and more. Take a look at our how it works section to learn more about our design process.

8. Storage space is sparse in many modern bathrooms. Most times you can remodel to gain more cabinet and storage space. Our floorplan layout packages help you determine spatial placement for existing floorplans. Contact us if you’d like to discuss your options.

9. Be sure to shop around for what you need in order to get the best price. The prices on the same fixtures can vary quite a bit between stores. Or you may hire us to do this for you. Prices for our shopping services fall in the same range as our designer on call rates. Plus we’ve spent years developing relationships with unique vendors who own beautiful product lines designed to fit any budget and spatial need.

10. A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference when remodeling the bathroom, but many people fail to take this important and inexpensive step. In fact, the right shade of blue sells a home faster than white or beige in most cases these days. Does that all sound totally overwhelming? No worries. We’ve got a package to help you with that as well.

I also suggest that you go out and have fun looking at the bathrooms in show homes and also the showrooms of your favorite design houses. This would be a great aid in the choice of fixtures and you can see, for example how important cupboards and storage are. KLD can help you with this part of your process. While we don’t offer structural changes for kitchens and bathrooms as of yet, we can help with decorative elements. The main thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the project and your new bathroom!
